Garah reading program supports whole community
The P&C in the small community of Garah, on the Carnavon Highway in NSW, 667 kms from Sydney, are very passionate and committed. After being nominatred for to the Aussie Cotton Farmers Grow Communities grant program, the Garah P&C received a $5,000 grant thanks to the Monsanto Fund, for their “Growing greater opportunities for Garah – reading program”.
The funding enabled them to engage a teacher's aid three mornings per week, purchase new books and the Reading Eggs program for computers and iPads, which can be used at school and is also available for parents to use at home. The P&C also held open days to share the reading and technology program with the community and get as many students and parents on-board as possible.
This program was a great success for the students, the parents and the wider community.
Students received individual reading time with the teachers aid and improved their reading outcomes
An important outcome was that the community learnt how technology has changed education for their children and how to get involved and be better prepared.
A key learning from the program was the children really do enjoy sharing their new knowledge and experience with their parents and their communities. This will be factored in for future programs!
