Record grants for projects supporting ageing rural Australians

FRRR has announced the 65 recipients of its annual Caring for Ageing Rural Australians grants. Communities from Port Douglas to Geraldton will share $444,798 toward projects and activities that improve the wellbeing of older Australians through community based proactive and positive ageing programs, as well as practical support such as equipment for centres and community based residential facilities.

FRRR’s CEO, Alexandra Gartmann, said the Foundation received an unprecedented number of applications for this year’s program – up some 300% on previous numbers, making this the biggest round in the program’s nine year history.

“We received requests for nearly $1.2m in funding to go towards projects valued at more than $5.3m. This level of investment is great to see, although it’s disappointing to only be able to support about a third of these, especially when 40% of them are first-time applicants,” Ms Gartmann said.

“However, it is pleasing to see communities investing in creating the facilities and programs that are needed now, but with an eye to creating the services and facilities they want to have in the future,” she said.

The grants awarded range from as little as $600 to $10,000. However each one of them will make a significant difference to a community.

There was also a marked increase in requests for technology to be used by older people, either within their own homes as part of e-health and social connection programs or in residential care for both therapy and social connection.

Ms Gartmann explained that the emphasis for most of these applications was the use of social media to keep older people connected with family and friends.

“Findings from a VicHealth Indicators Survey conducted in October 2013 found that staying socially connected by keeping in touch with family and friends is important for preventing social isolation. We’re really pleased to be supporting this kind of project, as it is important for older people to be supported in maintaining contact with their family, friends and communities and to stay socially connected,” she said.

While there are still requests for funding to enhance aged care infrastructure and patient care equipment, this round there were more requests to support activity programs and update outdoor areas.

This year’s CARA program was generously supported by Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation (NSW projects); McCusker Charitable Foundation (WA); Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Trust (QLD) and Ian Rollo Currie Estate Foundation (VIC), as well as a private donor.

The full list of projects funded is below. Anyone interested in helping to fund any of the projects that FRRR has been unable to is invited to contact the program manager, Jeanice Henderson, on 03 5430 2399.
