Innovative projects help rural people age in place
FRRR has announced the recipients of the eighth round of the Caring for Ageing Rural Australian’s program. This annual program provides grants of up to $10,000 to support projects and activities that benefit older people living in small rural and remote communities.
In total, the program is distributing $184,692 across 24 communities. The projects funded, which are listed below, range from upgrading aged care facilities and purchasing new equipment, to enhancing transport options, providing training in aged care and a range of engagement programs.
In 2013, in line with the wishes of our donors, the grants focused on communities in rural, regional and remote New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and central Victoria.
“Thirty-five percent of all Australians over the age of 65 live in rural, regional and remote areas. Given the increasing preference for people to grow old, stay healthy and stay connected to family and friends in their local community, there is a critical need for support services in these locations," said Ms Jeanice Henderson, Program Manager.
"As the recent Snapshot of poverty in rural and regional Australia highlighted, there are fewer medical practitioners and allied health workers, and access to pharmaceuticals is more challenging in rural and remote areas.
"We are therefore very grateful to the donors who partner with FRRR and allow us in turn to help even more people remain in the communities where they have lived and worked," she concluded.
FRRR thanks our partners who make this highly sought-after program possible:
- The McCusker Charitable Foundation
- The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Trust, managed by ANZ Trustees
- State Trustees who administer The John Sylvester Feehan Trust, The William Austin Zeal Trust and The William Henry Hutchinson Trust
