Rural communities receive support for local ageing programs

2016 CARA Grants

Bendigo, 5 December, 2016:  The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) has announced the recipients of the latest round of their Caring for Ageing Rural Australians (CARA) grants program.

Twenty-seven community groups across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria will share in $312,904. This includes four large-scale grants that have been awarded to projects in Victoria, which will receive $18,000 to $62,631.

Natalie Egleton, FRRR CEO, said that the need for local support for projects that improve aged-care facilities, equipment or programming remains strong. There were several requests to support sensory or communal garden areas and undertake landscaping works and small-scale rejuvenation projects, all designed to improve residents’ wellbeing or social inclusion. She also noted a growing focus on dementia care, and on research and evaluation.

“This round, we have funded several projects designed to enhance the wellbeing and care of people living with dementia, as well as their carers. Gilgandra in NSW will hold information sessions for people with dementia and their carers, while Gayndah in Qld is recreating a rural outdoor environment to stimulate memory and brain activity. Otway Health in Apollo Bay, VIC received a large grant to develop a new model of care by exploring ways to enhance health outcomes and improve workforce capacity,” said Ms Egleton.

“Many of the other projects we’ve funded reinforce the sustained efforts of smaller rural, regional and remote communities to maintain close ties with their ageing residents and keep them actively engaged in the community. This included applications from Men's Sheds, art programs, a local choir and establishing an intergeneration buddy program. These types of initiatives all play a critical role in local engagement and improving mental health,” said Ms Egleton.

Full details of the projects funded are detailed below, but a few examples include:

  • Ever Greening Euroa – VIC - $40,000 (large grant): Upgrading kitchen and bathroom facilities in five residential units at Currie Park to improve the safety and well-being of residents.
  • Complimentary Caravan, VIC - $5,104: Elderly residents and local school children will co-create a sound and visual arts presentation to challenge stereotypes and the disconnection that often exists between different generations.
  • Chair Yoga for Seniors - Stretching and Relaxation for Health and Balance, QLD - $3,840: A weekly yoga program for aged care residents and over 60’s from the community to reduce pain, improve sleep and deliver overall improved health benefits.
  • All Clear Skin Clinic, NSW - $2,075: Purchasing and providing access to specialist medical equipment to remove skin cancers and lesions will improve people’s health through earlier diagnosis and local treatment of serious skin conditions.

These vital grants are made possible by a small group of extremely generous donors that currently support this program for ageing rural residents, including:

  • Victoria (Small and Large grants) - Ian Rollo Currie Estate Foundation
  • Queensland - Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
  • NSW - Estate of the Late John William Fleming; The Carleton Family Charitable Trust; The Rural Enhancement Endowment

The 12th round of Caring for Ageing Rural Australians will open in 2017 – to find out more on this program and to keep an eye on application dates, go to the FRRR website.
