Small Grants, Big Outcomes: 91 community projects funded nationally via FRRR’s flagship program

$374,740 invested in supporting resilient and adaptive rural, regional and remote communities.

Bendigo, 13 February 2018: Ninety-one community groups have been awarded grants totalling $374,740 through FRRR’s Small Grants for Rural Communities program.

Pemberton Mill Hall
Pemberton Mill Hall, WA, a R30 grant recipient.

This program enables not-for-profit community groups in rural, regional and remote Australia to access funding that supports locally-led projects across a variety of areas.

FRRR CEO, Natalie Egleton, says the projects funded this round again confirm the need in rural, regional and remote Australia for funding to support local priorities.

“At the heart of the longevity and popularity of FRRR’s Small Grants program is its ability to fund a wide range of community projects. Because of the flexibility of this program and our special tax status, we can support community groups to implement projects that tackle local issues.

“In this round, we had requests for a wide range of projects –from education and health, to social welfare, environmental projects, arts and cultural initiatives.

Penguin District School sensory garden
Penguin District School, Tas, received a small grant for their sensory garden in R27.

“There was also a focus on improving, or establishing, vital community infrastructure, which is at the core of sustainable, vibrant communities. Quality local facilities contribute to a stronger sense of community pride and identity and play a key role in attracting new residents, businesses and visitors,” explained Ms Egleton.

One such place set to benefit is Beacon, 350 kms north east of Perth in Western Australia. The Beacon Progress Association has received a grant to enhance the community hall’s capacity to hold larger meetings, workshops, events, functions and fundraisers, by purchasing new tables, crockery, cutlery, outdoor gas heaters and a PA system.

“Beacon is a very small town – just 200 people – but the hall hosted events for groups of up to 150 people, despite only having equipment for 30 people. Volunteers would drive hundreds of kilometres to borrow what they need to cater for these larger groups. Owning this equipment will mean they can continue to host larger groups, and bring people into the community, supporting the local economy, at the same time as reducing the burden on volunteers,” Ms Egleton explained.

Some of the other projects funded in Round 32 include:

  • Increase local fundraising capacity and enhance community-led events on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, by purchasing kitchen appliances and catering equipment for the community centre kitchen.
  • Improve knowledge of nutrition and health and build confidence when cooking, by running cooking workshops for parents of young children in Katoomba, NSW.
  • Support the wellbeing, flexibility and fitness of local residents in Quilpie, QLD by training volunteer fitness instructors and purchasing gym equipment.
  • Preserve the cultural and social history of Waikerie, SA, by digitising and presenting films made by local residents during the 1950s and 60s.
  • Improve access to fresh food on King Island, by establishing a communal vegetable garden.

Small Grants for Rural Communities is a collaborative program, administered by FRRR and funded in this round by:

  • Scenic World
  • Ronald Geoffrey Arnott Foundation
  • Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
  • The David Mactaggart Foundation
