Big impact with the help of small grants

81 organisations nation-wide receive funding from FRRR’s longest running grant program

Bendigo, 29 July, 2016:  The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) has announced the recipients of Round 29 of their flagship grants program Small Grants for Rural Communities (SGRC).

This round, 81 projects will share more than $300,000. Communities as widespread as Marra Creek, NSW; East Arnhem NT; Bruny Island, Tas; and Wongan-Ballidu, WA received grants to deliver their projects.

Community infrastructure grants at work

Natalie Egleton, FRRR CEO, said that nearly half of the applications were for projects to improve local community infrastructure. The projects highlight the importance of this infrastructure to rural towns, with representation of community owned and managed meeting places such as community halls, recreation reserves and neighbourhood centres seeking grants to update kitchens and bathrooms, improve disability access, roofing repairs and to support improved OH&S access and comfort standards.

“These public spaces are integral to the fabric of community life in rural towns and their ongoing maintenance can see a significant increase in community-strengthening outcomes, as well as economic outcomes, from increased visitation and usage,” said Ms Egleton.

“This round, we also received many applications for projects relating to enhancing wellbeing and strengthening social capacity. This included projects like strategic planning workshops to assist the Byron Bay community to meet zero carbon emissions objectives and a quilting workshop in Gregory, Qld, to engage community members and teach them new skills, while building social inclusiveness and resilience in a drought-affected town,” said Natalie.

These grants are possible thanks to the support of numerous generous donors, including the following, all of whom collaborate with us to offer a simple, broad grant program to rural, regional, and remote communities:

  • Berrembed Trust
  • The Bertalli Family Foundation
  • Commercial Travellers Association of Victoria
  • Ronald Geoffrey Arnott Foundation
  • Pratt Foundation
  • The Julian Flett Endowment
  • The R.E. Ross Trust
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation, managed by Equity Trustees
  • Thyne Reid Foundation
  • The William Buckland Foundation, managed by Equity Trustees
  • Western Australian Community Foundation Charitable Trust
  • FRRR and other private donors

The 30th round of SGRC will open on 22 August. You can find out more on the Round 30 SGRC page on this site. Applications will close 7 October, 2016.
