Small communities receive New Year funding bonuses

Organisations share $450,000+ to deliver targeted, local solutions to local issues

One hundred and thirty-four community groups across rural, regional and remote Australia received a pleasant surprise when the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) announced the successful recipients of its Small Grants for Rural Communities program.

Of the 396 groups that applied this round, 28% will receive a grant thanks to generous donors who collaborate under the Small Grants banner to offer a simple, broad grant program to rural, regional and remote communities. This unique program allows eligible not-for-profit community groups access to up to $5,000 to address issues as wide-ranging as education, environment, social welfare, community wellbeing, health, arts and culture.  Examples include:

  • Establishing a community gym in Bedourie –1,600 km west of Brisbane – to help address chronic health problems;
  • Purchasing a coffee machine in Boggabri, north west NSW,  to teach students hospitality skills and provide funding base for school's extra programs;
  • Establishing a men’s cooking group in Titjikala, 1,600 km south of Darwin, to support healthy eating and self-sufficiency in this remote indigenous community;
  • Purchasing a ripper to control infestation of noxious weeds and facilitate establishment of indigenous plantings in Southern Brook, north west of Perth;
  • Running a photography course to support community members experiencing mental illness in West Ulverstone, in Tasmania;
  • Upgrading the electricals in the community hall in Devon North, Victoria, which is a vital community meeting centre as well as the place of last resort in an emergency;
  • Installing a kitchen in the only after-hours community building in Lochiel, in South Australia.

The full list of projects funded in Round 26 is available below.

FRRR’s CEO, Alexandra Gartmann, says that the Small Grants for Rural Communities program provides much needed extra funds for well-supported community projects.

“Most community groups are really effective at fundraising locally and often just need a small grant to get them over the line with a project. Broad community support is one of the essential ingredients for successful long-term outcomes. When we see funding from local partners, together with letters of support, it gives us confidence that the project in question will succeed and is needed in the community,” Ms Gartmann said.

The most common project this round was the ongoing maintenance of community halls, recreation reserve buildings and other community use buildings, with requests for building upgrades, maintenance and capital works of kitchens, bathrooms, roofs and disability access points being common themes. There were also a number of applications seeking support for war commemoration projects, sparked by both the World War One centenary commemorations as well as projects addressing ANZAC celebrations and memorials in 2015.

Ms Gartmann noted that this flagship grants program is only possible thanks to the generous support of its donors. “They make it possible for roofs to be put on halls, community celebrations to be adequately resourced, environmental and cultural groups access to appropriate equipment and remote youth groups to access quality technologies that build social connections,” she said.

Small Grants for Rural Communities is a collaborative program, administered by FRRR and funded by:

  • Bertalli Family Foundation
  • Commercial Travellers Association of Victoria
  • Berrembed Trust, managed by Perpetual
  • The McCusker Foundation
  • The R.E. Ross Trust
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation, managed by Equity Trustees
  • The William Buckland Foundation, managed by Equity Trustees
  • The Yulgilbar Foundation
  • FRRR and other private donors.
