Small grants help 150 communities deliver solutions to local issues

FRRR celebrates 25 rounds of rural, regional and remote philanthropy

Bendigo, 26 June 2014: One hundred and fifty small rural, regional or remote communities will share in nearly $410,000 in grants from the 25th round of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s (FRRR’s) Small Grants for Rural Communities program.

More than 600 groups applied for grants during the Silver Jubilee round of FRRR’s flagship program, which is made possible by several generous donors contributing to this broad grant program which focuses on rural, regional and remote communities.

FRRR’s CEO, Alexandra Gartmann, says the high level of interest confirms that philanthropic funds are as important as ever in helping to maintain the health and vibrancy of small rural, regional and remote communities.

“The number of groups seeking funds via this grant program remains high, with 78% of requests for funding coming from communities with fewer than 5,000 people,” she explained. “We continue to be inspired by rural, regional and remote community volunteers who are committed to creating capacity and increasing the wellbeing of their regions,” she said.

Ms Gartmann says that by donors pooling their funds, more community groups can be supported.

“The donors are the lifeblood of this program, while the community groups are the local champions. FRRR acts as the conduit – working closely with, and supporting, rural, regional and remote communities to fulfil their ambitions, and providing donors with FRRR’s special tax status, allowing them to channel their funds to community organisations that might otherwise not be able to access philanthropic funding. This collaboration makes the community a better place for all who live and work there,” Ms Gartmann said.

Diverse projects reflect different community needs

The projects funded in Round 25 are just a snapshot of the types of work locals are leading to advance their communities. Demand remains high for funds to enable the ongoing maintenance of community meeting places. Requests to establish and maintain community gardens were also popular, together with community wellbeing, culture (arts, tourism and heritage), education and social welfare initiatives. Some examples of projects funded this round are:

  • Morgan's Run - King Island Council on the Ageing Inc, Currie, TAS, $2,794: Enhanced disability access for island’s only low-cost aged/disability housing facility.
  • Reduce, Recycle, Relocate! Marnoo Soldiers' Memorial Park Reserve Committee, Marnoo, VIC, $3,500: Creating an innovative community-run recycling depot which decreases landfill, by helping to fund a concrete slab and relocating a shed.
  • Toodyay Farmer's Market Promotion Blitz - Toodyay Festivals Inc, Toodyay, WA, $2,250: Increased economic turnover through support of upfront establishment costs for new farmer’s market.
