Small communities, big potential: EOFY grant bonus for 111 communities

111 organisations share $400,000 for projects in rural, regional and remote Australian communities

Bendigo 29 June, 2015: FRRR today announced an end-of-financial-year bonus for 111 community groups across Australia, who are sharing nearly $400,000 in grants in the latest round of FRRR’s Small Grants for Rural Communities program.

This unique program, which is collaboratively funded by 21 donor partners, allows eligible not-for-profit community groups access funds to support projects that deliver positive local education, environment, social welfare, community wellbeing, health, arts and culture outcomes.

One hundred and eleven communities will receive grants ranging from $700 to $5,000 to implement a wide range of initiatives that help create a better community. Some of projects funded include:

  • Materials and equipment to complete a sensory park, increasing children’s developmental opportunities in Grong Grong, NSW
  • A broadcast mixer to promote community connectedness and student education at a community owned radio station in Maryborough, VIC
  • Culturally appropriate asthma education resources and training to improve Indigenous health outcomes in Port Augusta, SA
  • Support for 14 women from remote locations to participate in a national women in agriculture conference in Alice Springs, NT
  • Two day mental health education program for families, increasing community awareness and understanding of mental health issues in Quilpie, QLD
  • Vegetable garden beds, compost bins and tanks to encourage and teach vegetable gardening, healthy eating and cooking for primary school children in Penguin, TAS
  • A second-hand caravan to be converted into a mobile smoothies van to raise funds to build a Men’s Shed in Chapman Valley, WA, to help reduce social isolation.

Grants are reaching numerous far flung parts of Australia, from Lajamanu in central west NT and Wellstead in South West WA, to Napranum in Far North Queensland and Penguin in Tasmania. The list of grant recipients can be found below.

FRRR’s CEO, Alexandra Gartmann, says that these grants can be the difference between a project going ahead or not.

“Groups often tell us that their small grant was what got their project over the line. Despite the wonderful in-kind contributions that other community groups, businesses and individuals often make, actual dollars can be hard to come by. So these grants often provide the seed funding from which a project can be built and from which additional funding can be leveraged.”

“It’s the commitment of our 21 donor partners that allows this program to support rural, regional and remote communities in all Australian states and territories, contributing to local resilience, capacity and connectedness,” Ms Gartmann said. “And we always welcome more donors to support the enormous potential in smaller communities”.

Small Grants for Rural Communities is a collaborative program, administered by FRRR and funded by:

  • Bertalli Family Foundation
  • Commercial Travellers Association of Victoria
  • Doc Ross Family Foundation
  • Ethinvest
  • The Pratt Foundation
  • Hannaford
