Small grants take philanthropy to the bush

Demand for philanthropic support remains strong, especially in small rural, regional and remote communities, with more than 500 groups applying for grants through The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s (FRRR) latest round of the Small Grants for Rural Communities program.

This grant program is unique, as donors pool their funds to offer a simple, broad grant program specifically to smaller rural, regional and remote communities.

Requests were most frequent from communities with fewer than 1,000 people, accounting for 43% of the applications. FRRR’s CEO, Alexandra Gartmann, says the proportion of applications from small communities isn’t unexpected.

“In a small community, there are only a limited number of people or businesses to tap for local fund-raising initiatives, so a program like this, which is designed with these communities in mind, is extremely valuable. FRRR’s special tax status is also important, as it allows donors to channel these grants to community organisations that might otherwise not be able to access philanthropic funding,” she explained.

The most popular funding requests were for social welfare and community wellbeing projects, closely followed by requests to support culture (arts, tourism and heritage), education or health initiatives. Demand for environmental and natural resource management projects remains strong, while economic development has also been supported.

Building upgrades and maintenance, including kitchens, bathrooms, fencing and safe disabled access to community meeting places continue to be popular. Other frequently requested items included solar systems, funding for multicultural activities, upgrades for playgrounds and assistance for community gardening and cooking programs.

One hundred and sixty groups from small communities across Australia will share nearly $450,000 in the latest round of this far-reaching program, which is only possible with the generous support of our donors, including:

  • Bertalli Family Foundation
  • Friends of FRRR (which includes several individuals)
  • McCusker Charitable Foundation
  • The Estate of the Late Edward Wilson
  • The Pratt Foundation
  • The R.E. Ross Trust
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
  • The William Buckland Foundation
  • The Yulgilbar Foundation
  • The Ledger Charitable Trust managed by Perpetual Trustees

The next round – the program’s 25th round, its Silver Jubilee – will open in February, 2014.
