Over 100 community projects funded in latest round of FRRR’s flagship grant program

More than $410,000 to be put to use in rural, regional and remote Australian communities

Bendigo, 14 July, 2017: FRRR today announced the 103 community groups that will share in grants totalling $410,763 through Round 31 of the Small Grants for Rural Communities program.

The unique program from FRRR enables not-for-profit community groups in rural, regional and remote communities to access funding that supports local projects in a wide range of areas – from education to health and social welfare, the environment to arts and cultural initiatives.

FRRR’s National Programs Manager, Jeanice Henderson, says the projects funded in Round 31 are yet another example of the importance of FRRR’s most popular program.

“The ability of the Small Grants program to cater for such a wide range of activities is a big factor in its success. Furthermore, the program is able to reach groups and areas of the country that have reduced opportunities for fundraising due to small population size and geographic isolation, and that’s why we receive hundreds of applications each year.”

“In Round 31, Small Grants for Rural Communities continues to fund many improvements to vital community infrastructure and the purchasing of equipment for community spaces, while also supporting an increasing number of projects that enhance community well-being, health and social welfare, and challenges in the educational space.”

Some of the projects funded in Round 31 include:

  • Increasing the capacity to cater for a range of income generating events by purchasing a new fridge and kitchen equipment for the Sheep Hills Hall, Vic.
  • Providing volunteering opportunities on a significant heritage project that provides insight into, and understanding of life in the outback, through restoration of the underground bakery at Farina, SA.
  • Enhancing the ability of remote media workers to more effectively convey cultural stories, share sensitive topics and knowledge digitally by running a digital skills workshop at the National Remote Indigenous Media Festival in Irrunytju, WA.
  • Improving the health of remote Aboriginal leukaemia patients in the Northern Territory during long-term treatment away from home and family support, through the provision of nutritional food packs.
  • Supporting the ongoing delivery of a mindfulness program at Gadara School, NSW, through the provision of drums and teacher training.
  • Enhancing educational and employment opportunities, building their capacity to succeed in mainstream education, and increasing the self-esteem of disadvantaged young people by creating positive learning experiences through the delivery of a gardening-based program in Wynyard, Tas.

The next round of Small Grants for Rural Communities opens on 14 August.

Small Grants for Rural Communities is a collaborative program, administered by FRRR and funded in this round by:

  • The Berrembed Trust
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
