Shade for kids at Coleraine Kinder
Coleraine and District Kindergarten has provided preschool programs since 1954. It currently delivers a four-year-old kinder program three days per week to 14 children and a three-year-old program one day per week to six children. The Kindergarten connects with the wider community through regular visits to the Wannon Hostel in Coleraine to visit the elderly, play games and sing with them, and at Christmas time, the kindergarten is a big part of the town’s street parade, with children dressing up in Christmas-themed float and participating in the parade.
The Kindergarten Parent Committee works to ensure the preschool program remains available in Coleraine and can offer a quality program to the community. As fundraising in small communities is often challenging, the management committee applied for funding to complete a project that had been on their wish-list for a long time.
A popular water feature in the grounds of the preschool was often in the direct sun during kindergarten / playgroup hours. As a sun-smart kindergarten, staff needed to be able to provide safe areas for the children to enjoy outside activities. They received $7,000 from the Grants for Resilience & Wellness program, funded by the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund, to purchase and install a shade sail over the water feature, providing protection for the children from the sun, and allowing greater use of the area.
This supplementary funding means that the Parent Group will be able to apply their annual fundraising income to purchase materials for educational activities, further enhancing the learning opportunities for the kindy kids.
