$500,000 in Small Grants give rural community groups a New Year boost

Bendigo, 29 January 2019: The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) has announced 129 recipients will share in $506,059 in grants of up to $5,000 through Round 34 of their flagship Small Grants for Rural Communities (SGRC) program.

Ravenswood's new mosaic chair

The funds will be spread nationwide with recipients spread from Port Lincoln in South Australia and Cann River in Victoria, to Dunalley in Tasmania, Blackall in Queensland, the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory, Wiluna in Western Australia, and White Cliffs in NSW.

This grant program enables eligible not-for-profit community groups to access funds to support projects that they believe will make the biggest difference in their community. Projects funded support issues as broad as local education, environment, social welfare, community wellbeing, health and arts and culture outcomes.

“One of the hallmarks of this program is that it is deliberately flexible, which means it can accommodate a wide range of requests for funding that come in,” said FRRR CEO, Natalie Egleton.

“In this round, nearly half of the 300 applicants requested funds to invest in infrastructure and equipment, while around a quarter wanted support to develop awareness, knowledge and skills in their community. This sort of investment in community development is a crucial step in creating and maintaining stronger and more connected communities.

“Of course, none of this would be possible without the generosity of our donor partners, whose collective support contributes to securing positive changes for rural, regional and remote communities.”

Some of the donor partners are :

  • Australia Post
  • Portland House Foundation
  • David Mactaggart Foundation
  • Sidney Myer Fund
  • Estate Late Harold Gordon Jones
  • The Bertalli Family Foundation
  • Friends of FRRR
  • The Julian Flett Endowment
  • Hannaford
  • The R.E. Ross Trust
  • John T Reid Charitable Trusts
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
  • Kapikarnpi Community Fund
  • William Buckland Foundation
  • Scenic World Shared
  • Yulgilbar Foundation

This is the final round of the Small Grants for Rural Communities program before it evolves into Strengthening Rural Communities, opening soon.

Full details of the projects funded can be found below, but a handful of examples include:
