Big impact with the help of small grants

104 organisations nation-wide receive funding from FRRR’s longest running grant program

Bendigo, 11 July 2018:  The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) has announced 104 recipients will share in $425,057 in grants of up to $5,000 in Round 33 of their flagship Small Grants for Rural Communities (SGRC) program.

Recipients stretch from Koumala in Queensland, to Clarence Town in NSW, Yankalilla in South Australia, Parkham in Tasmania and Buckley Swamp in Victoria.

Nearly two-thirds of the grants will go towards infrastructure and equipment to drive locally-led change and improvements.

A large number of requests came from community owned and managed meeting places such as community halls, recreation reserves and playgrounds. Natalie Egleton, FRRR CEO, said that most were seeking support to update kitchens and bathrooms, to improve comfort levels for volunteers and users of the facilities.

“Public spaces are integral to creating a sense of community in rural locations, but their maintenance is a constant challenge. Facilities such as halls, toilets and parks are increasingly being managed by local volunteer committees and this program provides significant support for the upkeep and improvements needed to attract locals and tourists,” said Ms Egleton.

Environs Kimberley sea grass monitoring project

“The flexibility of the SGRC program is a big drawcard for community groups. This round, we received requests for lawn mowers, silo art, historical record preservation, website production, shading for playgrounds, volunteer training, a rainwater tank, a street festival and the list goes on. All things that are important to creating vibrant places where people want to live and work.”

Ms Egleton said that while these grants are small, they are often catalytic.

“FRRR knows from experience that on average, community groups will leverage these grants at least three times, to attract other financial or in-kind support. So, while the grants are small, they will really make a difference.”

The complete list of projects funded are on FRRR’s website, but some examples include:

  • Manoora Primary School, SA – increasing community engagement, health and well-being through the development of a community gardening and lunch program at the local primary school - $4,000.
  • Ellen Brockman Integrated Catchment Group, WA – improving local water and environmental health by conducting a water analysis along the Gingin Brook to baseline important nutrient data - $3,730.
  • Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities, NT – reducing the incidence of zoonotic diseases, such as scabies in community members, via a public education program for pet owners, and providing parasite control medicine for companion animals - $4,850.
  • Queensland Rural Regional and Remote Women's Network Inc, QLD – inspiring leadership and growth amongst women by recording and collating of 25 years of wisdom and achievements - $5,000.
  • Clarence Town School of Arts Hall Committee and Dungog Shire Council, NSW – enhancing community pride by hosting a community day to paint a mural on a local amenities block - $5,000.
  • Jamieson Community Group and Associated Bodies Inc, VIC – updating the amenity of the Jamieson Memorial Hall by purchasing and installing new kitchen appliances and safety lighting - $3,468.
  • Ouse Online Community Access Centre Inc, TAS – strengthening organisational capacity through a software upgrade to enable efficient management of accounts and use of volunteer time - $1,700.

Demand for support is very strong - FRRR received 283 applications seeking $1.2 million in funding for projects in 228 communities. The grants we have made are possible thanks to the support of numerous generous donors who collaborate with us to offer a simple, broad grant program to rural, regional and remote communities:

  • David Mactaggart Foundation
  • Hannaford
  • Friends of FRRR and other private donors
  • Kapikarnpi Community Fund
  • Ronald Geoffrey Arnott Foundation
  • Scenic World
  • The Bertalli Family Foundation
  • John T Reid Charitable Trusts

  • The R.E. Ross Trust
  • The Maple Brown Family Charitable Foundation
  • The William Buckland Foundation
  • The Sylvia & Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation
  • Yulgilbar Foundation
  • Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation

The 34th round of Small Grants for Rural Communities will open on 13 August and applications will close 26 September 2018.
